A Comparison Of Choice Experiments And Actual Grocery Store Behavior: An Empirical Application To Seafood Products AgEcon
Hudson, Darren; Gallardo, Rosa Karina; Hanson, Terrill R..
In this paper we compare results from an in-store field experiment and a mail survey choice experiment (CE) to investigate CE’s capacity in predicting grocery store market share. For the comparison, we used three seafood products: freshwater prawns, marine shrimp, and lobster. CE estimates were obtained via four econometric models: the conditional logit, the random parameter logit, the heteroskedastic extreme value, and the multinomial probit. We found that the level of control in the grocery store experiment and the choice of econometric model influenced the capacity of CE to predict grocery store market shares.

Des îles et des épiciers. S’approvisionner en biens alimentaires dans les îles du Ponan ArchiMer
Guingot, Marie.
The Ponant Islands are diverse in terms of population, surface or distance from the continent. Most of food products consumed on these islands are coming from the continent. It is therefore necessary to transport them to the island, all along a route whose main element is the sea crossing. This is what makes island supply special. Grocery stores are not equivalent in all Ponant Islands. The island maritime service requires the local grocers to adapt and implement supply strategies. This results in different modes of conveyance for food products to island territories. While most of the food products consumed on these islands are bought in local grocery stores, consumers are increasingly reaching out to continental grocery stores. This is creating new flows...

Obesity in Urban Food Markets: Evidence from Geo-referenced Micro Data AgEcon
Chen, Susan E.; Florax, Raymond J.G.M.; Snyder, Samantha D..
This paper provides quantitative estimates of the effect of proximity to fast food restaurants and grocery stores on obesity in urban food markets. Our empirical model combined georeferenced micro data on access to fast food restaurants and grocery stores with data about salient personal characteristics, individual behaviors, and neighborhood characteristics. We defined a "local food environment" for every individual utilizing 0.5-mile buffers around a person's home address. Local food landscapes are potentially endogenous due to spatial sorting of the population and food outlets, and the body mass index (BMI) values for individuals living close to each other are likely to be spatially correlated because of observed and unobserved individual and...
